Abstract:
La Conferenza analizza come, nel campo del patrimonio culturale, le tecnologie dell'Informazione e della Comunicazione trasformino le architetture della conoscenza, impongano nuovi requisiti organizzativi e giuridici e responsabilità a livello educativo. In questo scenario in rapida evoluzione, i topic emergenti sono il knowledge management, la conservazione digitale, le strategie e metodologie di accesso.

The Conference analyses how, in the domain of cultural heritage, Information and Communication Technologies transform the architectures of knowledge, impose new organisational requirements as well as juridical and educational responsibilities. In this rapidly evolving scenario, emerging topics are knowledge management, digital preservation, access strategies and methodologies.
The 'fil rouge' linking the presentations is the relationship between the general landscape of digital production and the operational definition of what is labelled “digital library” and “digital preservation”. The presentations focus on the need for common strategies, tools and solutions, and for shared methodologies to promote cooperative development, and huge attention is paid to users' expectations.
Objectives are to present the user's point of view on digital library applications, accessibility and usability and to stimulate the active involvement of cultural actors; to develop sustainable policies of preservation and open access; to propose common objectives and work agendas to be adopted and implemented by the participants during future semesters in the framework of the European Union action plan and programmes.
Main topics in the programme cover digital library applications trends and opportunities, digital preservation technical and organisational issues, trusted digital repositories and audio- visual archives: production and preservation.
In session I, an overview is drawn about current policies and worldwide initiatives with particular attention to the European Commission programmes on digital libraries.
In session II, some on-going initiatives on digital preservation are presented, a specific section is devoted to business models and audiovisual archives.
Session III outlines the user’s point of view about digital library applications and content holders approaches including emerging trends.
The conference was supported by many institutions and projects and more than three hundred attendees from important centres in Europe and worldwide confirmed the interest and importance of these topics. Based on the outcomes of the conference, some important cooperation agreements are under definition and the user community is more aware and stimulated to build opportunities for a joint development. The most urgent priorities have emerged, in particular in the direction of stimulating cooperation among centres of competence within the European Union and with non European partners. The intention by many actors of creating a competence centre on digitisation and digital preservation in Firenze was clearly declared. The next conference on similar topics in Firenze will be in 2009, we will be waiting for you.
