The Project Sound and Music Archives aimed to identify methodologies and tools to facilitate the use of information technologies for the conservation and enhancement of the heritage sound and the audiovisual sector.

The enormous sound cultural heritage recorded as of the early 20th century on supports of various types, such as magnetic tape, records, cylinders and other materials, is undergoing an irreversible process of rapid deterioration, owing to various concurrent causes.  The danger is that without prompt interventions, in a few years’ time, we will arrive at the irremediable loss of memories of great cultural value. Furthermore, the reproduction equipment of these supports, which are no longer in production, and especially the necessary spare parts, are rapidly disappearing from the market, along with the relative competences matured through the years by many technicians.
